montelukast and suicide risk

  The FDA just came out with a boxed warning about serious mental health side effects (increased risk of suicidal thoughts or actions) from montelukast (Singulair), see  https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-requires-boxed-warning-about-serious-mental-health-side-effects-asthma-and-allergy-drug Details: --there were already warnings about mental health side effects of montelukast, leading to a prior FDA concern published in 2008; part of the reason for the FDA's highlighting this risk now by a boxed warning is that many health professionals (including me) were unaware of this potential risk --montelukast is prescribed for allergies and asthma in adults and children >1yo, seasonal allergic rhinitis in those >2yo, and those with year-round indoor allergies >6 mo old --the increased risk of neuropsychiatric events  may stop after discontinuing the med , though these events may continue after its discontinuation --montelukast i...
